Tesla's Shanghai factory is the first wholly foreign-owned factory established in China, located in the Lingang Free Trade Zone of Shanghai's Pudong New District. It includes four major production workshops: stamping, welding, painting, and assembly, as well as auxiliary facilities like CUB. The main products are the Model 3 and Model Y.

The Ninth Mechanical Institute undertook the general contracting project for the painting workshop in Phase I, with a building area of 45,000 m2 and a production rhythm of 36 JPH. From equipment installation to the first vehicle off the line took only 97 days, setting a record for the fastest equipment installation in the country.

The project has the following characteristics in its process layout and technology application:

  • The four major workshops adopt a joint factory plan, with a compact overall layout and high logistics transportation efficiency between workshops;
  • A centralized three-dimensional warehouse is set up, coexisting with finished painted car bodies and skids, maximizing space utilization;
  • The emptying area is uniformly planned on the first floor, with 90% of the production area concentrated on the second floor, achieving minimal internal logistics during production stages; the separation of upper and lower layers maximizes the utilization of building space.
  • The glue line, spray painting line, and finishing line use a dual-line layout scheme, which is more conducive to flexible production and easy switching;
  • The pretreatment uses a film process, with spray painting using B1 and B2. Compared to traditional processes, it is more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and economical;
  • The spray painting room uses a dry paper box method, which is more environmentally friendly and causes less pollution;
  • UBS adopts a non-separation technology scheme for car skids. Since there is no transfer process, it eliminates the risk of downtime caused by failure rates;
  • Robots are extensively used to replace manual operations in rough sealing, UBS, threshold glue application, spray painting, and foaming, reducing labor costs while improving product quality stability.
